How to Choose Pans For Your Kitchen

Especially for a new cook, making the choice of which pans to add to your emerging kitchen can be a frustrating search. Pans are made in every size, shape and material, and the benefits and uses of each are unclear to many people. I recommend talking with your parents or friends who cook in order to get advice on the types of pans they like and which brands they prefer.

Perhaps the worst thing you can do is buy a big and inexpensive set of pans from a place like Ikea. These will not be well-made and will be difficult to cook with. For example, it will be easy to burn foods in these pans since the metal is using extremely thin and won't spread out the heat coming from your stove. It will be easier to learn to cook if you start out with decent tools that don't encourage you to fail.

Cookware Set

A good strategy is to buy several pieces of moderately priced cookware and one or two high quality pieces. For example, you may want to find a good brand of cookware and buy a saucepan, a frying pan, and a dutch oven. Think more about what you will use for your cooking, and less about what will look good in your kitchen. Sometimes these go together: Copper pans are beautiful and functional, though they will cost more than the average high quality pan. Don't buy too many pans at first: Buy a few and see what you use, and understand what you are missing from your collection for the types of foods that you like to cook. Then, assemble your cookware collection piece by piece to meet your specific needs.
